Owning a High Performance Car

Owning and maintaining a high performance car can be a little more time consuming and expensive than owning a normal automobile, but the style and speed of a good performance car can make it worth the trouble. Since a performance engine is more powerful and runs higher than an average car engine, it requires a little extra care to keep it in top performance shape. These high end engines work better when you give them premium oil, gasoline, and other special parts and accessories to make their operation a little smoother.

Regular Maintenance is Crucial

Performance engines have a tendency to overheat if they don't receive enough attention. You can't skip an oil change and expect everything to remain fine under the hood for long. Keep an eye on oil and fluid levels by checking them at least once a week. Regardless of the oil change schedule, change the oil if you notice that it is starting to collect any dirt or change color. Your engine's oil is the most important way to keep all of those high performance parts operating smoothly without any problems.

Tire Pressure and Alignment

The tires on a high performance car are also an important part of maintaining a smooth and steady performance from your car. Check the tire pressure every time you put gasoline in your car. If the tires are a little low, go ahead and take the time to air them up right away. Many performance cars are equipped with low profile tires that require the proper inflation to help keep the car stable at high speeds. The alignment of your high performance tires will allow you to control the car more easily as you turn corners or drive on the highway.

Choosing the Right Oil and Gasoline

The special engines on high performance cars require special fluids to keep them operating at the optimal level. Synthetic oil is much better for a performance engine because it tends to collect dust and dirt more slowly. Synthetic oil also spreads throughout the mechanism in a more even layer, which reduces regular wear and tear on your engine's parts. Premium engines also like to burn premium grade gasoline. The premium gas may cost more, but it burns more cleanly in your high performance engine. Clean burning fuel will help keep the engine running cleaner and reduce the risk of overheating.

Cosmetic Concerns

Sometimes the most expensive part of a high performance car is its exterior rather than its engine. Paint and body work on high performance cars can be extremely expensive. The aerodynamic nature of your car is directly affected by dents and scratches in the paint. As soon as you notice an irregularity in your car's finish you should assess the damage and decide on the best way to fix it. The longer a dent or scratch goes unfixed, the more expensive and time consuming it will be to fix in the future. Most dents can be repaired by using do it yourself kits from local retail automotive stores.

Driving Style Makes a Difference

How you drive has a direct impact on the life of your car. If you always gun the motor and take off quickly from a dead stop it will wear your engine down much more quickly than a slower start. Idling the motor for long periods of time can cause it to overheat and potentially crack the heads or make the belts wear out more quickly. High performance cars are made to be driven hard, but they have delicate parts that will wear down under the strain of being driven hard all of the time.

Storage Options

One of the best things you can do to extend the life of a high performance car is to store it in a covered building out of the weather. Constant exposure to sunlight, wind, rain, and the normal shift from higher to lower temperatures can take a heavy toll on the exterior of your car. Weather changes can also cause the parts of your high performance engine to expand or contract, which can cause the engine to wear out more quickly. If you don't have a covered building to protect your high performance car in, the next best thing is to purchase a heavy plastic or vinyl tarp to cover your car when you are not driving it.
